Bio-degradable Straws
Made from PHA — a bioplastic produced by fermenting canola oil — our straws look, feel, and perform like plastic while breaking down naturally in marine and soil environments.
What is PHA?
PHA — short for polyhydroxyalkanoate — is a family of bioplastics naturally produced by microorganisms. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, PHA is synthesized through the fermentation of plant-based feedstocks such as canola oil. Bacteria consume the oil and store PHA inside their cells as an energy reserve — the same way animals store fat.
What makes PHA exceptional is its end-of-life behavior. While conventional plastics persist in the environment for hundreds of years and fragment into microplastics, PHA is recognized by the microorganisms present in marine water and soil — and is completely broken down with no toxic residue.
The result is a material that performs identically to conventional plastic during use, but disappears like organic matter after disposal — the first truly functional, full-performance biodegradable straw on the market.
PHA vs. Other Straw Materials
How PHA Straws Are Made
Our manufacturing process starts with canola oil — a renewable, plant-based feedstock — and produces a durable, fully biodegradable bioplastic through a clean fermentation process.
Canola Oil Feedstock
The process begins with canola oil — a renewable, plant-based raw material that replaces petroleum as the primary input.
Bacterial Fermentation
Specialized bacteria are fed the canola oil and, under controlled conditions, convert it into PHA as intracellular energy reserves within their cells.
PHA Extraction
The PHA polymer is extracted from the bacterial cells through a clean separation process, yielding a pure, durable bioplastic resin.
Straw Manufacturing
The extracted PHA resin is formed into straws and stirrers using standard extrusion processes — the same equipment used for conventional plastic, just a cleaner material.
Features & Benefits
PHA is the only bio-based material that matches conventional plastic performance while offering genuine end-of-life biodegradability — in marine and soil conditions alike.
100% Bio-Degradable
Unlike paper or conventional plastic straws, PHA straws break down naturally in both marine and soil environments — leaving zero microplastic residue.
Bacteria-Fermented
PHA is produced by feeding canola oil to specialized bacteria, which convert it into natural cellular energy reserves. Those reserves are extracted to form PHA — no petroleum required.
Certified Gluten-Free
Our PHA straws are 100% certified gluten-free, making them safe for customers with dietary sensitivities, celiac disease, or gluten intolerance.
Plastic-Like Performance
PHA straws look, feel, and perform exactly like conventional plastic straws — no soggy paper collapse, no bamboo splinters, no aftertaste.
Marine Safe
Certified to biodegrade in open ocean conditions. Unlike petroleum-based plastic, PHA does not fragment into microplastics that persist for centuries in marine ecosystems.
No Harmful Additives
PHA is produced without BPA, phthalates, or synthetic chemical additives — the same toxins found in conventional plastic that leach into drinks and the environment.
Straws & Stirrers
Our PHA product line covers the full range of food service needs — from cocktail stirrers to standard drinking straws — all with the same biodegradable performance.
PHA Straws
Full-size drinking straws made from 100% PHA bioplastic. Rigid enough for cold and hot beverages, resistant to collapsing or softening, and certified gluten-free for food service applications. A direct drop-in replacement for conventional plastic straws.
- ✓Rigid — won't collapse or go soggy
- ✓Works with hot and cold beverages
- ✓Certified gluten-free
- ✓Biodegrades in marine & soil environments
PHA Stirrers
Cocktail and coffee stirrers made from the same PHA formulation. Ideal for bars, restaurants, hotels, and corporate events. Fully biodegradable with no compromise on durability or presentation.
- ✓Suitable for bars, cafes & events
- ✓Durable under stirring pressure
- ✓No chemical leaching into drinks
- ✓Compostable after use
The Problem with Plastic Straws
Plastic straws are among the most pervasive single-use plastic pollutants on the planet. Too lightweight to be captured by most recycling systems, they end up in landfills, waterways, and oceans — where they persist for over 200 years before fragmenting into microplastics.
Americans alone use an estimated 500 million plastic straws every single day. Globally, billions more are discarded annually, contaminating beaches, killing wildlife, and entering the food chain through marine ecosystems.
Paper straws — the most common substitute — solve one problem but create others: they go soggy, affect taste, and still require significant water and energy to produce. PHA solves both problems simultaneously: full plastic performance, genuine biodegradability.
The PHA difference: When a PHA straw reaches the ocean, the same microorganisms that process organic matter recognize and consume the PHA polymer — breaking it down completely with no microplastic byproduct.
Our PHA straws are 100% certified gluten-free — an important differentiator for food service operators serving customers with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
